How to support reading at home

At our school, we believe that strong reading skills are key to confident, independent learners. That’s why we teach strategies in school to help students become fluent, thoughtful readers — and we encourage parents to reinforce these simple habits at home.

Reading regularly helps students:

  • Build vocabulary;
  • Improve understanding;
  • Strengthen performance across all subjects.

Reading Fluency: What to Try at Home

When your child is reading aloud at home, encourage them to:

  1. Read to punctuation – pausing at full stops, commas, and asking questions with the right tone.
  2. Use expression and volume – bring the text to life with their voice.
  3. Read at a natural pace – not too fast, not too slow.
  4. Read accurately – correcting small mistakes as they go.

These small strategies make a big difference in how well students understand what they’re reading.

Bedrock Learning

We subscribe to digital platform called Bedrock Learning. It’s designed for students aged 6 – 16, and it’s perfect for both home and school use and can be used on a mobile phone, tablet or computer device.

Bedrock focuses on improving vocabulary, grammar and subject-specific language skills. This helps students to gain the language and the literacy knowledge they need to do better in their studies.

Students can log in using the same username and password provided to them to log onto the school computer network.
