Mathematics
At Notley High School, we have adopted the White Rose Maths scheme of learning for Key Stages 3 and 4. This scheme meets the goals of the National Curriculum and uses a mastery approach to deliver that curriculum.
In summary, a mastery approach…
- Puts numbers first: our schemes have number at their heart, because we believe that confidence with numbers is the first step to competency in the curriculum as a whole.
- Puts depth before breadth: we reinforce knowledge again and again, and aim to deepen understanding, rather than accelerate learning.
- Encourages collaboration: students can progress through the scheme as a year group, supporting each other.
- Focuses on fluency, reasoning and problem-solving: provides the skills students need to become competent mathematicians.
White Rose Maths carefully order the skills, revisiting the concepts in other areas of the curriculum and making sure that topics are covered so pupils experience variety as well as consolidation.
