Food & Textiles

The department benefits from a suite of specialised classrooms to support the Food and Textiles Technology curriculum.

Food Preparation and Nutrition

While studying Food Preparation and Nutrition students will learn all about the source, seasonality, and characteristics of a broad range of ingredients and will be able to understand and apply the principles of nutrition and health. Our aim is to enable students with the knowledge and understanding to make informed choices about food. Practical lessons consist of both savoury and sweet dishes and equip students with a range of essential cooking skills required for life. Food links to a variety of subjects, including Maths, English, RS, Geography, Science and Personal Development. Students will learn to be creative, inquisitive, ambitious and confident. There is a broad range of career possibilities in the food industry; the Food Preparation and Nutrition GCSE course prepares them well for any of the options they wish to take from being a chef to working in food development. Our teachers are passionate and supportive; students not only make excellent progress but enjoy studying Food.

During Years 7, 8 and 9 students learn about Food in both an engaging and interactive way. By the end of KS3 students will be equipped with a range of practical skills and a sound understanding of the principles of nutrition, having a greater understanding of the world around them. Lessons alternate between theory and practical, the practical lessons help to embed the theory learnt and prepare the students with essential cooking skills required for life.

In Year 10 and 11 (GCSE) Food Preparation and Nutrition must equip students with the knowledge, understanding and skills required to cook and apply the principles of food science, nutrition, and healthy eating. They will be encouraging students to cook and enable them to make informed decisions about a wide range of further learning opportunities and career pathways as well as develop vital life skills that enable them to feed themselves and others affordably and nutritiously, now and later in life.

Textiles Technology

In KS3 Textiles Technology, students respond to design briefs by developing original fashion and textiles products to meet the aesthetic and functional needs they identify.

Taking inspiration from themes that interest them, as well as the work of other designers, they explore design possibilities before planning the production of these innovative items. A wide range of specialist textiles equipment is available to ensure manufacturing of the highest standard can be achieved as each student’s skill level develops throughout their years of study.

Construction

Construction and the Built Environment is a Key Stage 4 only course designed for students who want to learn about the construction industry. Students are introduced to different trades and the range of career opportunities available within the sector. They will begin the course focusing on Unit 1 – Introduction to the built environment. Alongside the teaching of the theory unit, students will complete three mock controlled assessments. This will mirror the kind of assessment they will complete in year 11 which forms 60% of the qualification. Students will be given full and detailed feedback on their mock controlled assessment. This will prepare them for the final controlled assessment in year 11.

This is a standalone KS4 course which does not directly link to KS3 DT. The course is taught in the construction workshop and all controlled assessment is computer based.
